Brothers Akin
Every year as part of a routine
We all make our charity visits-
From orphanages to old age homes
Giving them smiles and tit-bits.
..But this year was like no other,
It was different-to say it in short;
More than giving it’s what we have received
From how they touched us-whether knowing or not.
The folks we met were extraordinary-
To whom this world is just unreal;
Perhaps united spend time in a world of their own,
Gazing on, their smiles impossible to steal.
To us they might seem oddly made,
“Retarded”, we’d call them, or “ugly”
But in God’s big picture, what do we really know?
We’re only tenants here, both you & me.
What joys they know of, their happiness inside,
It’s what the world’s been looking for, for years-
A peace that lasts through all the times,
Never clouded by worries or tears.
They see no reason to fear the darkness
To fear fire, hunger, the wild
Whether King or pauper-it’s the same to them
-Show affection, honest like a child.
We call them those with “special needs”,
But looking at it from new perspectives now,
Maybe its us, it’s
us who are lacking inside;
Lacking softness, having forgotten how;
How to lighten a spirit with a smile, like they do,
Or spread hope with a touch of a hand,
Maybe the reason our Father’s put them here,
is to remind us of where we now stand.
We’ve hardened ourselves to others around,
Being caught up with money and time,
These people are here to teach us a lesson
And that concludes just why I rhyme.
They’ve taught me how to take things slow,
To face life day by day,
To take in, relish, rejoice and be glad
In the blessings God’s sending my way…
And maybe that’s why you read this now,
‘Cause He’s telling you something too;
That there’s more joy in life in loving brothers akin,
Than in being caught up in the works you do.
